Emmanuel B. Carpio, Danielle F. Fajardo, Trixccia Ann R. Gallamos, Marco C. Gidayawan, and Edrian E. Terciano, BS Petroleum Engineering students, successfully defended their thesis proposal entitled "Silver nanoparticles modified with Moringa oleifera (Malunggay) Leaves Extract as Corrosion Inhibitor for CS X60 Steel" last April 23, 2023, in partial fulfillment of their Petroleum Engineering Methods of Research.
Petroleum is a valuable tactical source of energy, and every facet of its extraction is pivotal. Because pipelines transmit oil and gas from wells to refining units, they are constantly jeopardized by corrosion from the period they are designed until they are abandoned or dismantled. Corrosion can induce abrupt deterioration of metal pipes and materials, culminating in sizable capital accumulation setbacks and operational safety issues. As such, corrosion is a fundamental constraint in the oil and gas sector, with ramifications analogous to those of a catastrophic occurrence. Moreover, corrosion reduces the mechanical strength of oil and gas pipes, resulting in leaks and other issues.
More recently, the use of plant-based extracts with silver nanoparticles gained attention as an alternative to commercially-available corrosion inhibitors, which are toxic and have damaging effects on the environment. Among various plant extracts, Moringa oleifera leaves have been reported to contain various phytochemicals and antioxidants that could possibly be used for corrosion protection.
This study will focus on the corrosion inhibition efficiency of AgNPs modified with Moringa oleifera (Malunggay) powdered extract (Moringa-AgNPs). The resulting Moringa-AgNPs will be used as a corrosion inhibitor of CS X60 Steel samples. The effect of temperature and Moringa-AgNPs concentration on the corrosion rate and inhibition efficiency will be investigated using a Central Composite Design by performing weight loss measurements. Finally, the optimum conditions to achieve maximum corrosion inhibition will be determined.
Their research project will be conducted from 2023 to 2024.
