Mr. Michael Angelo Zafra, Mr. Emil David D. Villena, and Mr. Jon Nyner L. Gavan, all BS Chemical Engineering undergraduate students, bested other researchers across the Philippines in the recently concluded Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers Undergraduate Research Competition (PIChE URC 2019) during the National Student Congress, held at the De La Salle University, Manila, February 26, 2019.
Their work, entitled "Colorimetric Detection of Copper (II) Ions in Aqueous Solutions using Humic Acid Functionalized - Silver Nanoparticles," aims to develop a novel nanosensor for the detection of heavy metals in drinking water. This is particularly important for point-of-need monitoring of heavy metal concentrations where the use of expensive instrumentation can be costly. This study was done in collaboration with Engr. Edgar Clyde R. Lopez, a PhD Chemical Engineering student, and Dr. Jem Valerie D. Perez, research adviser.
Bringing home the second place are students from the University of the Philippines Visayas with their study entitled "Removal of Tetracycline from Aqueous Solution via Fenton Process Using Iron-Impregnated Biochar." The third place goes to the Batangas State University with their study entitled "Synthesis of Hybrid Carbon Quantum Dots from Tamarindus indica L. and Mangifera indica leaves for the Detection of Mercury (Hg2+) Ion in Purified Water and Simulated Seawater."
The congress, organized by the Philippine Institute of Chemical Engineers Metro Manila Academe Chapter, also held the annual PIChE National Quiz Bowl on the same day.
