Dr. Edgar Clyde R. Lopez has been selected as one of the distinguished finalists for the 2025 NAST Talent Search for Young Scientists. This prestigious recognition is awarded annually by the National Academy of Science and Technology, Philippines (NAST PHL).
The NAST Talent Search is a cornerstone project aimed at identifying and nurturing exceptional young Filipino scientists, encouraging them to build impactful careers in science and technology within the country.
Dr. Lopez earned his place among the finalists through his innovative research focused on environmental remediation. His entry, titled "Removal of diesel oil from water using biochar derived from waste banana peels as adsorbent," presents a novel and sustainable approach to tackling oil spills. The study, published in the international journal Carbon Research, investigates the potential of converting common agricultural waste, i.e., banana peels, into biochar, an effective material for absorbing diesel oil spills from water bodies.
The final paper presentation stage of the competition was held on March 5, 2025, at the Prime Hotel in Quezon City, where Dr. Lopez presented his findings alongside other top contenders.
He joins a talented group of finalists from various scientific disciplines and institutions:
Khent P. Alcantara, PhD Pharmaceutical Science and Technology (Our Lady of Fatima University)
Victor Manuel R. Aricheta, PhD Mathematics (University of the Philippines Diliman)
Leilani S. Dacones, PhD Plant Pathology (University of the Philippines Diliman)
Isaiah Paolo A. Lee, PhD Molecular and Evolutionary Systems Biology (University of the Philippines Diliman)
Ryan Cristian V. Lintao, MD-PhD Molecular Medicine (University of the Philippines Manila)
Bienson Ceasar D. Narvarte, MS Marine Science (University of the Philippines Diliman)
Ernesto E. Paruli III, PhD Molecular Engineering and Interaction (University of Santo Tomas)
The winners of the Talent Search will be awarded trophies and cash prizes. The grand prize winner will receive significant support for their future research endeavors, including a PHP 500,000 research grant funded by the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and a PHP 100,000 cash prize from NAST PHL.
Dr. Lopez's achievement highlights the cutting-edge research being conducted at the University of Santo Tomas and underscores the vital role young Filipino scientists play in addressing pressing national and global challenges through scientific innovation. The announcement of the final winners will be held on July 10, 2025, at the Annual Scientific Meeting of NAST.
